Under 11 Saturday 12th April

Kinsale  5  Richmond 1

It might have been the pressure that knowing victory would have ensured we captured the title but we started off very nervously on a perfect morning for a football match. Richmond could have been 2 up after 10 minutes if it were not for some great tackling from our 2 centre halves Jason Cohwig and David O’Leary. Slowly we started to settle in to the game and with Jack O,Regan and Michael Sheehan taking control of midfield the gaps started to appear in the Richmond defence. On 20 minutes a clash in the Richmond box left their influential midfielder suffering a broken tooth and we all wish him well and hope the injury will be fixed fully.  This seemed to unsettle Richmond and shortly after we struck for the opening goal when a passing movement between Eoghan Lynch and Paul Harrington ended with Eoghan volleying into the far corner for his 13th of the season. Richmond to their credit did not lie down and tried to attack us down the wings but with Shane Lannigan and Shane Hackett really on top of their game there was no way through and Gareth o’Sullivan in goal was rarely tested even though he looked very comfortable in a new position for him.

The second half belonged to us and we really showed our quality. Joseph Cronin took the game by the scruff of the neck and ran the pace of the game. Paul after coming back from injury wanted to show how invaluable he is to the team[if it was ever in doubt] by running the Richmond defence ragged with his pace and skill. Paul got his reward by scoring 2 great individual goals which sandwiched another Adian

McCarthy special. Richmond tried to fight back but Simon Kearny showing how much he has made the step up this year,Adian o,Neill very solid at right back and Shane o’Dwyar with his pace and strength this was going to be very difficult.Eoin Healy also began to take a dominant part of the game and scored a lovely goal when he rifled to the net from edge of the box with 10 minutes to go. Jamie Gayle who came on was all the time getting in to good positions in the box and was very unfortunate not to get on the score sheet as the ball on a number of occasions just did not break for him. Richmond scored a consolation goal with 5 minutes left and it was no more than they deserved.

This was another great victory and with the results from other matches going in our favour we have been crowned champions.

We are the first team in all of Cork Schoolboys League to win their league this year and we did this through winning all of our games.

We only conceded 9 goals all season and we also have one of the best goal differences in all of the leagues +27.

Most importantly we have put Kinsale AFC on the map as this is the first trophy the club have won and may it be start of great times ahead.

Thank to all of the parents that turned up on the day and hopefully we can all be back for the last game of the season to celebrate our fantastic achievement.

Our under 11s put their 100% record on the line at a windswept Pigeon Hill on Saturday morning against mid table Leeside. Playing with a gale force wind behind us we ran into an early lead when after a nice passing movement between Michael Sheehan and Cathal Butler that set up Adian McCarthy to fire home from what seemed an impossible angle. Wiyh Michael Sheehan and Eoin Healy now totally dominent in midfield we controlled the game for long periods and could have had another goal when Adian McCarthy beat 2 players in his own half and after storming up the pitch with the ball under close control he was unfortunate to see his final shot drift inches wide of the post. Leeside began to show some attacking flair but our defence with the 2 Shanes (Lanigan and Hackett) showing great composure they did not have one shot on goal in the first half. After 25 minutes we scored a deserved second goal and it was that man again Adian McCarthy who did the bussness after he unleashed an unstoppable shot from the edge of the box that flew into yhe top corner of the net to score his 16th goal of the season, a brilliant strike. We continued to dominate and with Cathal Butler Jack Hayes creating some openings through their intricate passing movements we looked as if we might score again but Leeside packed their defence and held out to half time.

The second half was always going to be a different story and with the wind to their backs Leeside came out with all guns blazing and our defence came under extreme pressure. It was then that the power of Jason Cohig came in to the game and with captain Michael Sheehan and a man of the match perfomance from Eoin Healy in front of him we were

holding out quite easily for the first 15 minutes. Throughout this we continued to push forward on the break and after Aidian Mc Carthy won a ball in the air Eoghan Lynch rifled the ball high into the net to score his 12th of the season. After this with noyhing to lose Leeside threw caution to the wind but Hugh Whelan showing terrific composure snuffed out everything that came his way up the left. With Leeside now throwing everyone forward our reluctant keeper David Moynihan showed his class by totally dominating his box and making at least one world class save. David showed immence bravery in diving at the feet of the opposition players on at least 4 occasions when they seemed destined to score. With 2 minutes to go Leeside scored a conolation goal from the edge of the 6 yard box which took a wicked bounce and crept inside the post.

This was a great performance from Kinsale and with 2 home games left we have a huge opportunity to clinch the league in our first year.

Thanks to the parents who turned out to support even though the weather was poor and hopefully we will see a lot more for the crucial last 2 games where if we keep playing as we are will be crowned Champions.
