Kinsale versus Ballinhassig 23/2/08

On a cold and windy day in Charles Fort Kinsale under 14s came up against Ballinhassig in the first round of the cup. Ballinhassig were unlucky not to score in the opening minutes but only managed to hit the crossbar. 10 minutes later Jack Gould played a through ball to Ollie Conner who was tripped in the square and a penalty was awarded which was duly taken by Andrew Daly who made no mistake about the outcome, shortly after a great one two between Colm Daly and Jamie O Connell who finished with a great turn and shot to the back of the net 2 nil Kinsale. After the break Ballinhassig had a number of attempts on the Kinsale goal but kinsale goalkeeper Killian o Brien was equal them. Ballinhassig broke one on one with the keeper and chipped over his head only to see there effort cleared off the line by an acrobatic Niall Crowely. On a counter attack Kinsale won a corner which was taken by Ollie Conner, the resulting corner saw Gavin Murphy come from the back to volley over the line to make the score 3 nil. The score remained like this till closing minutes when Shane Ronan played a crisp ball through to Jamie O Connell who rifled it home to make the score 4 nil. The game finished with Kinsale advancing to the second round.

IMPRESSIVE PREFORMANCE BY KINSALE

Kinsale in need of a win had a tough assignment when they travelled to Leeds. Leeds, near the summit of the table expected an easy victory but Kinsale had other ideas. A rapid start to the game saw Leeds get on top causing the Kinsale defence some problems but our defence, as ever playing the offside rule to great effect, caught the Leeds strikers out on a number of occasions. At the other end of the field our two attackers, Jamie O’Connell and Andrew Daly caused all sorts of problems for the Leeds defence. It was only good goalkeeping that kept Kinsale out. There was a hard battle in midfield with Shane Ronan and Jack Gould working extremely hard but to no avail. All of Leeds pressure finally paid off with a lapse in concentration between our centre backs, letting the Leeds attacker break though and with a bit of confusion, the Leeds player hit the back of the net. At half time Leeds were well on top. Kinsales preformance was well under par. Coming back onto the field, Kinsale knew that they had a lot of work to do. Thankfully, Leeds sat back as if to say the game was already over. Kinsale took advantage of this with a good tackle from Niall Crowley who passed the ball to Colm Daly who managed to keep the ball in play. Colm passed a good early ball to Andrew Daly with a brilliant finish into the bottom corner of the net. The goal sparked Kinsale into life and now chances were occurring in front of the Leeds goal mouth. Good work on the right flank by mid-fielder Gavin Corridon and defender Luke Allen kept the Leeds left midfielder out of the game. With the score at one all both teams were frantically trying to get the winning goal. Eric Cotter managed to clear the ball up field to Andrew Daly, who rounded his man and comfortably beat the keeper. In shock, Leeds began to push everyone up for an equiliser but were denied by some wonderful pieces of defending by Gavin Murphy and Cian Hackett. The game ended 2-1 to Kinsale. As far as the League is concerned this was a real upset! The Team: K.O’Brien,L.Allen,E.Cotter,G.Murphy,N.Crowley,G.Corridan,S.Ronan, J.Gould(c),C.Daly,J. O’Connell and A.Daly. The Subs: C.Hackett,B.O’Donovan and R.O’Sullivan.

Kinsale too good for Richmond

On a cold, windy morning at Charles Fort, Kinsale, looking for their first win of the season, took on Richmond. In the first half, Kinsale played with the wind. Richmond got off to a good start with a free kick just outside the box but it was put well wide of the posts. As the game went on Kinsale started to settle. Shane Ronan and Jack Gould started to string a few passes together, feeding the ball into the two wingers, Gavin Corridan and Colm Daly. Finally Kinsale got the opening goal of the match with a good cross into the box by Jamie O’Connell and was calmly put in by Colm Daly. Kinsale were one up at half time. A very influential team talk by our coaches Andy and Ger got Kinsale ready for the second half. Kinsale got off to a good start with our two forwards, Andrew Daly and Jamie O’Connell, creating chances that put the Richmond defence under pressure. The second goal came from a corner with a low ball at the edge of the box, picked up by Jack Gould who then struck it into the bottom corner of the net. Soon after a shot, which was half blocked by the Richmond keeper, was picked up by Gavin Corridan who tapped the ball into the net. But Richmond never gave up. They were looking for their first goal but a rock solid Kinsale defence consisting of Cian Hackett, Luke Allen and Gavin Murphy, kept Richmond at bay. Just before the final whistle, Colm Daly sealed Kinsale’s victory making it impossible for Richmond to come back. The Kinsale subs also played very well towards the end. The final score Kinsale 4: Richmond 0. A valiant effort from Richmond wasn’t good enough for a strong Kinsale side. The team: K. O’Brien, L. Allen, C. Hackett, E. Cotter, G. Murphy, G. Corridan, S. Ronan, J. Gould (C), C. Daly, A. Daly, J. O’Connell. Subs: N. Crowley, D. Healy, J. Wright, R. O’Sullivan, D. Evans, B. O’Donovan
